The paper considers the development of social networking and the concept of Web 2.0. and argues that this poses fundamental challenges to the
relevance of libraries.
It applies Prensky's concept of digital natives and digital immigrants to library users.
A whole generation is appearing in all disciplines who see libraries as a luxury of choice rather than a desirable necessity.
It looks at the implications for libraries and how traditional competences remain relevant.
Explores what libraries are doing and must do to remain relevant.
