a Strategy
The string of
terms, wildcards, and logical operators entered for a search, such as (cough?
AND fever?) OR insomnia, is referred to as a search strategy. Depending
on the type of work you do, you may frequently repeat the same search in
the same or similar database(s). The Save and Restore options let you save
your search strategy and recall it the next time you want to use the same
search.
Save
a Strategy
For example,
let's assume that every month when the MEDLINE database is updated, you
want to search for new records containing the term melatonin:
-
Enter melatonin
in the Select Subject Headings field and click Search.
-
With the first
set of records highlighted, click the Latest OnDisc Records limit
to select it.
-
Click Narrow
and a new set of records displays in the Search History box.
-
Click the Save
button on the main page. The Save Strategy page displays the current search
strategy that will be saved.
-
Enter a name for
the strategy, such as New Melatonin. (Single or double quotes are
not allowed in the search name.)
-
Click OK.
The strategy is stored on the NT server running the DIALOG@Site software
under the username. The screen updates with the main search page.

Restore
a Strategy
To reuse a
search strategy you have saved, use the Restore button. Be aware that if
you execute the saved search in a different database, you may get zero
hits if the database doesn't contain the same fields.
To restore a
saved strategy:
-
Click the Restore
button on the main page. The screen updates with the Saved Searches for
your username.
-
If there are multiple
saved searches, use the list to select your desired strategy. Click the
strategy to highlight it.
-
Click OK.
The strategy is run on the database you are currently in and returns you
to the search page. The search results are shown in the Search History
box.
