Series/Greek Culture in the Roman World
Editors: Susan E. Alcock, Jas' Elsner, Simon Goldhill

The Greek Culture in the Roman Empire offers a rich field for study. Extraordinary insights can be gained into processes of multicultural contact and exchange, political and ideological conflict, and the creativity of a polyglot, changing empire. This was also a period when many fundamental elements of Western society were being set in place: from the rise of Christianity, to an influential system of education, to long-lived artistic canons.
This series is the first to focus on the response of Greek culture to its Roman imperial setting as a significant phenomenon in its own right. To that end, it will publish original and innovative research in the art, archaeology, epigraphy, history, philosophy, religion and literature of the Empire, with an emphasis on Greek material.

Athletics and Literature in the Roman Empire
Jason König - University of St Andrews, Scotland
From the first to the third century AD Greek athletic culture flourished as never before and this book provides significant and exciting new readings of those developments. By drawing on a wide range of evidence it sheds important light on the most distinctive features of athletic competition and athletic education in the Roman Empire. In addition, it examines the representation of athletics within both literary and epigraphical evidence, paying close attention to the controversies such representation attracted. Above all this exploration seeks to demonstrate the way in which discussion and representation of athletics could become entangled with other areas of cultural debate.
The book presents an argument for intricate and complex connections between different types of athletic representation, particularly those between 'literary' and epigraphical texts. It offers re-interpretations of major authors such as Lucian, Dio Chrysostom, Pausanias, Silius Italicus, Galen and Philostratus.
